California Daily Overtime and Double Time Rules
California Labor Code 510 requires 1.5× pay for hours over 8 in a workday and over 40 in a workweek. It also requires 1.5× for the first 8 hours on the seventh consecutive day of work. Double time (2×) applies after 12 hours in a day and after 8 hours on the seventh day.
Example
A 14-hour day works out to 8 regular hours, 4 OT hours and 2 double-time hours. Weekly overtime only counts hours that weren't already paid as daily OT, so nothing gets paid twice.
Check with the California DLSE or your HR if you're on an alternative workweek schedule.
