What Is a Night Shift Differential and How Is It Paid?

A shift differential is extra pay for evening, night or weekend hours, usually $2–$8 an hour or 10–15% for nurses. Federal law doesn't require it, but if your employer pays one, it must be included in your regular rate when overtime is calculated. That raises your OT rate a little.

Our calculator adds differential hours on top of base pay as a simple estimate.
